The French verb plier means “to fold” or “to bend”.

When my son was born, much of me was carefully folded and tucked away to make room for what he needed me to be: the buffet, the nurse, the housekeeper, the personal assistant, the playmate...and recently, the coworker.  When I felt lost and things felt dark, I found light in that little boy's closet.  I found me.

And so a seed was planted.

"Legacy.  What is Legacy?  It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see."

-Hamilton: An American Musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda

My name is Tiffany and I am a mom of two, woman in STEM, serial small towner, fresh air chaser and patient seed planter (literally and figuratively).  I founded plierbaby.ca (pronounced plee-AY) in 2021, to help families make environmentally, ethically and economically conscious clothing selections for their babies and toddlers, without the added effort.

As a parent, there are so many things to worry about: dietary balance, screen time, emotional intelligence...the list goes on.  Beyond their physical and mental health, safety and security, we worry about the kind of world our kids will grow up in.  We know that every decision we make for our baby has the power to impact both the person they will become and the world around them.  The weight of this responsibility can be overwhelming.  I want to change that, in whatever small way I can.

plierbaby.ca celebrates simple, classic clothing items made by Canadian small businesses that are supporting sustainability initiatives in a variety of ways.  For example:

        • use of recycled and compostable packaging
        • use of low impact materials and responsible production processes
        • participation in community improvement projects

We suggest that families reduce and reuse, before they recycle.  Supporting this philosophy, we also provide store credit for used items returned to us through our Lightly Loved program.  These items are cleaned, mended and given another life with a new family, or repurposed as a new product.

The choice to invest in sustainable clothing has a positive impact that is twofold.  We may never see the direct impact of this decision on the world, but our kids will.  And the impact of this decision will live on indirectly, through the seeds we've planted in them.
